Mexican Amaranth is a small, immigrant family-owned business based in the United States.
Our mission is to promote Mexican amaranth as an invaluable superfood that deserves a role in enhancing the quality of everyone's diet in the US. As time and science progress, incredible nutritional attributes have been found in this tiny seed.
Amaranth cultivation dates back thousands of years to the traditional agricultural practices of the indigenous peoples of present-day central Mexico. It took thousands of years to domesticate and perfect the surviving amaranth strains that are harvested and consumed today. Due to the cultural importance of the amaranth grain for our indigenous populations, Europeans attempted to eradicate it, and the consumption decreased almost to nothing. Since those times, a few local native producers have fought to maintain this super grain as part of their diet, adding it to countless dishes and in the form of the traditional amaranth bar called "alegria", which means "happiness" in Spanish.
Called the "king of grains" in India and the "little giant" in South America, amaranth has been incorporated into the staple diets of many countries worldwide, from Greece to China and Africa. Today, we face an increasing number of global issues, including corporate monopolization of agribusiness, dietary problems, environmental imbalances, farmer migration, and the erosion of cultural roots. In this context, by consuming Mexican amaranth, we support traditional Mexican farmers and reap the incredible nutritional benefits of this grain.
